Portland Area Explorers: Tryon Creek
Cost to visit: Free
Ages: All ages (some hikes are more kid friendly than others but most are friendly to jogging strollers or hiking backpack). Toddlers and older children alike will love the opportunity to climb, splash and explore.
Location: 11321 SW Terwilliger Blvd, Portland, OR 97219
(15 Minutes or so from downtown Portland!) We used Waze to get there but the location aso shows up easily on Google Maps.
Parking: Quite a lot of parking near the Nature Center
Bathrooms: At the Nature Center is your best bet for finding a bathroom. We found them clean and warm.
Accessibility: Mixed. Many smooth paths accessible to strollers and wheelchairs, however on some of the hikes there are stairs to be contended with to reach the top. 8-miles of hiking trails, 3.5 miles of horse trail, 3-mile paved bicycle trail, and a paved all abilities trail.
What to do here: Hike and enjoy nature! Visit the nature center! Story and Stroll for 2-6 year olds (and their parents or caregivers) is a fun and informative free event offered by The Friends of Tryon Creek. A volunteer leads children and their adults in an educational story time and then a kid friendly nature hike, ending with a craft back at the Nature Center. Visit tryonfriends.org for more info on Story and Stroll and keep an eye out for an upcoming blog post!
Why do we love it?: As if the fresh air isn't enough, the close proximity to the city really sells this beautiful park. With 8 miles of trails, this park really has everything a nature loving family or individual could want.
Our advice: Pack a picnic (or a hearty snack) and finish your hiking adventures quietly munching and enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of nature.
Tryon Creek State Park is a favorite in the Portland area and a favorite for us at Planet Nanny. Check it out and let us know what you think. We look forward to exploring more and sharing more of our adventures in posts to come!
